Popsy, I like your explanation of how difficult it was to imagine how to live in that time; I think Rees' book does a good job with getting you into the head of the characters and can help you visualize what they went through. Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand. (paperback, non-fiction) goes to to Dixie, because it is a wonderful book and her blog A few of my favorite things is completely lacking in any sort of book review. I'm counting on Seabiscut's heroic story to inspire her to write one.
