Giveaway Carnival - Book Giveaway

I'm participating this year in the Book Giveaway Carnival and am pleased to offer the following available book giveaways.

Please comment here regarding your interest and why you want what you want - I'll select at least one, and possibly more recipients depending on the quality of entries. I will be reviewing one of these books in November, and request that the winner respond to the review with comments on the book awarded.

Here's the 411 how to win -
  1. Comment below explaining which book you'd like to win and, most importantly, why.

  2. I'll review the entries and select the most compelling entrant to receive a book - if the quality of comments is high, I may award more than one book.

  3. Entries must be received by midnight EST on 11/9 and the recipient will be selected on 11/10.

  4. In November, I'll post a review of the book awarded - return to the review and post your comments.

Available giveaways include literature for a variety of readers:

Witch Child by Celia Rees (hardcover, teen fiction)Let's look at the planets (Poke and Look) by Laura Driscoll (hardcover, nonfiction, young readers)
Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy - (paperback, science-fiction) Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand. (paperback, non-fiction).

The fine print: Winner receives the book free & clear and I will pay to ship the book to you. Entries from spammers, pornographers, and people unable to read or write in English will not be accepted. (If you are fluent in another language, that's great, but the giveaway books are in English.) If the shipping costs for the prize would be beyond a common-sense threshold, for example more than the value of the book, I may substitute an e-prize of some sort.

Oh oh oh! I would love LET'S LOOK AT THE PLANETS because I review books for young readers but I have only reviewed one non-fiction book for young readers. I really need to read, review, and enjoy more non-fiction books for young readers. Thank you so much for this opportunity!

Awesome giveaways! I too would like a chance to get Let's Look at the Planets. I work in an elementary school with 2nd-5th graders and planets is one thing that they learn about in Science. This would be great to share with them. Also, I don't usually pick up and review non-fiction titles and this would give me a chance to do that as well. Thanks for the opportunity.

I would love Witch Child. I have always yearned for the time and motivation to write a book starting with events during the Salem Witch Trials, but have not yet had time. I believe that someday I will be able to do so, and in the meantime, devour all fiction that centers around this time period. This looks like a novel that may be labeled as "teen" but is really just a slightly shorter read for a mommy like me to read more quickly ;)
Great giveaway, thanks!

I am having trouble deciding. Blegh! Great books - I know my 4 year old, who's autistic, would love Let's Look at the Planets, but, selfishly, his mama wants to read "Witch Child" because one of my favorite books of all time is "The Witch of Blackbird Pond." (There's a great corresponding story in Madeline L'Engle's Swiftly Tilting Planet, when Charles Wallace enters the body of a child struggling with extraordinary visions during the witch trials.) On the other hand, it seems impossible that I've never read Woman on the Edge of Time, since I love dystopian fiction and anything feminist.

Hmm.

In the end, I think I will have to choose Witch Child. If I'm going to win, and help review a book, I want to do it with something I will really enjoy. And also I'm not sure I can make it through Woman on the Edge until December because I'm doing NaNoWriMo.

I am very much interested in "Let's look at the planets." My blog is a children's book and media blog, but most importantly, I have two little kids that would benefit from reading and owning the book. My son was born during a lunar eclipse, so all references to the moon would be particularly interesting to us. Thanks.

After reading the synopsis of the book, I choose Woman On the Edge of Time. I read almost any genre, and I find science fiction to be one of the hardest to find truly good books. I'm a huge fan of Phillip K Dick, and this one sounds a lot like one of his. The question of whether this woman is merely insane or if she is truly traveling to another time is one of those unanswerables. Like Prot in K-Pax -- is he from another planet, or is he just a severely damaged human being? I would love to read this one and see if it provides answers or raises more questions about the nature of reality.

Witch Child by Celia Rees is what I'd love to be entered for. I think it looks like a really intersting book and I know my sister would enjoy it since she really likes reading about all that happened in history with witches. Thanks.

I would choose Witch Child. Looks like a good read. My daughter has asked for this book, but I would read it first. LOL

I would like to read Witch Child I have heard quite a lot about it since middle school when one of my teachers told us about it. She said it was her favorite book ever and even though she said it was great I have never gotten around to reading it and would really be interested in doing so. It is a book that I will definitely enjoy. I like books with female protagonists, sad plots, interesting plot, and overall books that are a good read. Thanks for the opportunity.

Woman on The Edge of Time sounds good. My daughter and I are both sci-fi fans so when I get done she may borrow it (if she doesn't beat me to it).

Thanks for having the giveaway!

I would love Witch Child. My great-great-grandmother was Pagan, and she hid it for so many years, and ever since I found out, i've been drawn to that religion and witches. I still have the letter she wrote to me explaining it all!

Witch Child by Celia Rees would be my pick only because anything to do with the witch trials fascinates me. I couldn't imagine myself living during that time, being wary of what I said or what I'd do, for fear of being accused as a witch. And if one was accused of being a witch, the torture they'd endure is sickening. It was a lose-lose situations for the people accused. At least with the other horrors in the world, it all came down to either religion or your race, so you'd know why you are being targeted. With this, you didn't. If you gave someone a dirty look, or refused a marriage offer, you'd be accused as a witch.

That was a little longer than what I wanted, so I'll stop here and ask to be entered into your giveaway.

Thanks

~ Popin

I would like to win Witch Child for more than one reason. First of all, I started reading this book about 5 or 6 years ago, and for a reason I cannot remember never finished it. My copy of it has also disappeared. From what I remember about it, this is exactly my kind of book. It's about the persecution of "witches", and I like to read fiction where characters overcome oppression. Also, there is a paranormal element, which is one of my favorite things to read about. I enjoy reading books where the characters have some sort of paranormal ability. It's also teen fiction, which is just about all I read. Thirdly, my friend keeps telling me how good books by Celia Rees are, and I trust her reccommendations.

I would love to win "Let's Look at the Planets" for my little guy. I've been reading aloud to him since before he was born, and he loves being read to now. I know the content is a little beyond his years (but as is the content of most of the other books he is read), but I believe he benefits from the reading just the same. Also, he adores brightly coloured pages, so this book would be a page-slapping (litterally) winner in his eyes! Thank you for the wonderful giveaway!

"Let's Look at the Planets" sounds like the book for my young niece and nephew. I like how a preschool child can enjoy the book and still learn from it years later. The illustrations are wonderful! This book would be an enjoyable, educational book for my niece/nephew. A great Christmas gift. Please enter me in your fabulous drawing. Many thanks, Cindi

I'm so interested in Witch Child. I think that was a completely fascinating time in history and having recently discovered historical fiction, I'm all the more interested. I think the combination of a real witch in a fictional story is fascinating and will no doubt add elements to the story which will make it incredibly interesting. Fear of the unknown caused so much misunderstanding and distrust during that time period and even though there's still a stigma of scariness and fear surrounding witchcraft, I just know that this would be an ultimately satisfying and illuminating read.

I think that Witch Child would be the one I would pick to read. I love historical fiction. My teenage daughter, who also loves to read, says that she should have been born a hundred years ago. We were vacationing in Mass. a couple of years ago, and we didn't get to go to Salem, although, we both wanted to go, somehow the great history of the northeast passed us by as we enjoyed other, more trivial pursuits with the family. We have both regretted it ever since. I think this would be a perfect book for the two of us to read and discuss and enjoy together.

thanks for the opportunity to win

I would love "Woman on the Edge of Time" for so many reasons. The history of mental illness is a sad and tragic story in history. It wasn't that long ago that all it took to have a woman committed was her husband's testimony that she was crazy. This book also sounds like a great read in how amazing our mind can be in protecting us in tough situations.

I'm intrigued by "Woman on the Edge of Time" -- the questions of fantasy and sanity and how they intermix would be very interesting.

I would love to win Witch Child. My mother and I have always been fascinated by the Salem Witch Trials. This book looks like an amazing read. If I don't win, this will be one of my must reads regardless. If I won though, I'd be able to pass on to my mom who is also a fan. Thanks for the opportunity, great selections!

Woman on the Edge of Time sounds right up my alley! I've always been intrigued by female characters in fantasy/science fiction. It's such a male-dominated genre, it's lovely to find women in prominent roles.

I'd like to read Seabiscuit an American Legend. I am probably among the few who have never seen the movie.
I am usually disappointed with the movie versions after I have read the book first-I don't know why that is. The films just never seem to live up to the book, at least for me. Anyhow, I would love to learn the story behind this great race horse.
