Lunar the Coonhound available for adoption

One reason I love dogs is for their philosophy of life - no matter what happened yesterday, each day is a new day and most dogs will easily move on and put their past behind them. Lunar certainly needed all of this attitude to make it as far as he has - when we got him, he was extremely thin and weak. With some extra feedings and TLC, he has come into his own rapidly and is just the funniest ungainly hound, so eager to please you that he tries to sit up for a treat even though he falls over each time.

New foster pup: Bowie II

We got a new foster pup recently from the Indianapolis Humane Society and he's such a quiet lad compared to the beagles; admittedly that is setting the bar a bit low.

We're thinking that he's some kind of border collie/chow/lab mix. He's definitely got a chow-ish head, but he's also been trying to herd the beagles, which is pretty amusing to watch. Updates on his behavior and socialization are coming up regularly on 'his' posts at indypaws.com. The lad does not like the Roomba, but loves getting baths.

Any ideas as to what kind of dog this might be? Comment if you know.

Dewey the pup is now available from the Humane Society of Indianapolis. Dewey's profile is also available on Indypaws!

He is still staying with us for a bit until he finds his forever family.

We are fostering again, this time wonderful largish beagle who presently goes by the name Dewey. Dewey was found as a stray in the vicinity of Whiteland, Indiana and was brought into the Indianapolis Humane Society earlier in the month - he's listed as a found dog. He is 1 year old, skinny as all heck and is so uncertain of his place in the world. With the exception of having found himself a place on our couch, that is. He's the first hound I've ever met who had to be encouraged to eat. (FYI, he's all current on shots, is microchipped, and is getting along well with kids and other dogs.)

Our family will be walking in the Mutt Strut at the Indianapolis Speedway to help raise money to care for animals through the humane Society of Indianapolis. We have been fostering dogs for the Humane Society of Indianapolis and are happy to help to get dogs into their forever homes. We also adopted two Beagles from HSI, who are fun and friendly as can be.

Canine foster parenting 101

This week was our first as a foster family for a pup named Hugh from the Humane Society of Indianapolis. We got our two beagles from them, and were so impressed with their care and compassion for the animals that we decided to participate in their foster dog program. In brief, the program places animals who for one reason or another (health or behavior) wouldn't do well in the shelter environment; the animal is cared for at a foster home until a forever family is found.

I started posting Hugh's info on craigslist.org and also at petfinder.com; since then, I received a bunch of scam offers for pet purchases involving shipping as part of an advance fee fraud scheme. Nasty mean scammers. So I won't be doing that again.

If you are considering adding a new pet to your home, please check out a shelter dog. The variety of personalities, ages, sizes, and breeds at a shelter mean that there's likely a match for any animal lover. And usually the fee is much less than what a pet store or breeder would charge, if cost is a concern.

But mostly we're busy this week not posting things online but instead working with Hugh and getting him socialized. Hugh is an affectionate, adorable but painfully shy little guy with huge feet! I've so enjoyed watching him come round this week.
